STOP MOTION PUPPETS 2025

Ongoing experiments in building stop motion puppet armatures

INSTALLATION

  • Still Bodies was a composition inspired by a scene from my film Entwine, where lovers intertwined in a sleeping embrace are consumed by painted plants growing over them. I wanted to continue this abstraction of nature and body through now collaging a landscape of human form with no rhyme or reason to the depth and scale. It reflects the skin-like folds of the mountains in Southern California and the animation disrupting the forms breath change it into a new type of organism mimicking a growing, changing, and even decaying landscape. The bodies become one in a loop of close upshots leading to a collaged mural of flesh. The sound adds to the uncanny nature of it, fading between a hissing of flies and a peaceful field recording from the mountains the piece is inspired by. I hoped to create a sweeping growth between a cohesive wrap-around landscape, timed to play in an offset sequence, just as a chorus may sing in “rounds.”
